So we are officially on strike- and I'm annoyed to realize that our training class was almost certainly hired in the expectation that we would all scab. Well, TELUS was much mistaken in me at least- but half the class did cross the picket line and I am so disappointed in all of them. I feel like we've been played like a cheap violin by the management- and so many of my classmates fell for it!
People can be so willfully blind and short-sighted sometimes- they keep talking about how we need to respect each other's "personal decisions" (and by "they" I mean management). It's such an obvious ploy to break the solidarity of the union. The whole point of a bargaining unit is strength in numbers- we are not individuals when it comes to bargaining for salary and working conditions. If we were, there is no way in hell we would all be enjoying the salary they pay us. But when it comes down to brass tacks, no one wants to stand together to fight for job security. They all seem to think that because they have bills to pay and kids to feed, they should get a pass on supporting their union. As if the strikers all live in happy-fairy-no bill-land and feed their children from macaroni bushes and twizzler trees!
Anyway, the whole situation is making me feisty- and you all know how I love to get feisty! I have to admit that I'm pretty excited to be a part of this- I feel like we're trying to strike a blow for social change. So wish me luck and I'll try not to be too boring about my fight against THE MAN.
